What do we do ? The clubs goal is introduce young people of all abilities to a range of cycling disciplines. The club aims to provide fun, exciting and challenging activities whether you are just getting going on your bike or an aspiring Olympic champion. The activities are run in a safe off road environment by qualified coaches generally in Bellahouston Park or Pollok Country Park and vary from basic core skills to track cycling, cyclo cross and mountain biking. We have a wide variety of abilities at the club and we tailor the sessions to meet the needs of the riders whether that is improving you skills to compete in events, just trying to improve your basic bike handling skills. If you want to know what we are doing when please have a look at the calendar. What do I need to bring ? All you really need is a bike and a helmet although the club does have a variety of bikes available to borrow, we just ask that you treat it as if it was your own bike. All riders and coaches must wear helmets at all times when on a bike (if you don’t have a helmet we have a limited number available to borrow – just ask). We try to run sessions regardless of weather so even if it is sunny and warm when you leave the house please make sure you bring some foul weather clothing. We also recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands and keep them warm. The session run for two hours so also please bring a snack and a drink. Who Are We ? Glasgow Riderz is a ‘Go Ride’ registered youth cycling club based out of Bellahouston Park. We currently have 4 coaches all of whom have completed their ‘Level 2’ coach training and a small committee of volunteers who run the club. Jake Lovatt : Club Contact and trainee level 2 coach. Edd Shackley: Level 2 coach. Andrew McCaffery: Trainee level 2 coach. Graham Kelly: Trainee level 2 coach. Janice Mitchell: Club welfare officer and treasurer. Les Thomson: Club volunteer and auditor. Iain Ritchie: Club Chairman. Gary McDonald : Club volunteer. We also get support from Rab Wardell from Scottish Cycling who is the Glasgow City Regional development coach. All the club coaches and volunteers and welfare officer have Disclosure Scotland certification. What is Go-Ride ? Go Ride is British Cycling’s Club Development Programme aimed at improving both young riders and clubs. It focuses on volunteers and young members – improving coaching standards and increasing the number of young riders with access to coaching activities. Go-Ride supports the creation of school-club links, which helps provide clubs with a constant influx of new young members and helps everyone work towards our shared vision of more young people, more active, more often in cycling. The success of Go-Ride is dependent upon partnerships between British Cycling, clubs, schools, local authorities and voluntary organisations. For more information please have a look at the British Cycling website. Where and when do we meet ? We meet every Saturday 10am-midday between Easter and October during school term time usually at Bellahouston at the bowling club pavilion next to the sports centre and swimming pool. We do sometimes also run sessions through the week or holidays and at other locations but the best place to find out what we are doing and where is to look at the calendar on the website Who can join and how much does it costs ? There is no lower or upper age limit for the club although the target age group is typically between 5 and 16yrs (we have had members under 5 and over 16) The only restriction we have is that riders should be able to cycle unaided and without stabilizers. If riders have younger siblings who perhaps are not quite ready to join the club they are more than welcome to try and join in if accompanied and adult. Any doubts best thing to do is come along and see how you get on. First two sessions are free and from then on there is a £10 charge for the year. Can I help ? Parents are more than welcome to stay and assist their children especially with the younger group. We also very much welcome any parents who would be willing to help in the wider sessions and be registered as a formal club helper. Although there is no commitment to help out every week we do require all coaches and volunteers to go through the Disclosure Scotland process which the club arranges. Are there other clubs nearer where I live ? There are lots of clubs all over the Scotland, below are the websites for some Johnstone Jets Edinburgh Racers Dundee Discovery Junior CC Wallace Warriors Carnegie Cyclones Western Titans Who do I contact ? If you want any information please just pop down to Bellahouston on a Saturday mornings either just before or just after the sessions or drop us an e-mail. |
