Glasgow Riderz is a youth cycling club established in 2005 under the British Cycling “Go-Ride” scheme. Over the years we have grown from a handful of kids, often outnumbered by the coaches, to one of the UK’s largest youth only cycling clubs.

The club’s goal is to introduce young riders of all abilities to a range of cycling disciplines – we provide fun, exciting and challenging activities whether you are just getting on your bike or an aspiring Olympic champion. The activities are run by qualified British Cycling coaches in a safe off road environment and vary from core skills to track cycling, cyclo-cross and mountain biking.

We are based in Bellahouston Park and cycling activities take place in the park itself and in nearby Pollock Park. (Bellahouston has large open spaces and a cycle track, Pollock has mountain bike trails).

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

All you really need is a bike and a helmet although the club does have a variety of bikes available to borrow – all that we ask is that you treat the bike as if it was your own. All riders and coaches must wear helmets at all times, again we have a small number available to borrow – just ask.

We try to run sessions regardless of the weather so even if it is sunny when you set out please bring foul weather clothing, we also recommend gloves to protect you hands and keep warm. There is a members’ and parents’ ReadMe.

Who is it open to?

Anyone over the age of 6 who can ride a bike without stabilisers.

When and where do you meet?

We meet at the bowling club adjacent to the sports centre in Bellahouston Park at 0945 on Saturday mornings. The club runs two terms – one from after the Easter holidays (or as soon as it is warm enough to make standing in the park in the drizzle a survivable event) until the start of the summer holidays. The second session runs from the end of the summer holidays until roughly the end of October (or until we start losing coaches to hypothermia. The kids are usually fine as they are all riding round the whole time!).

How much?

For 2015 the annual membership fee is 15 pounds. There is a further charge for each term of 15 pounds. There are reductions for subsequent children in the same family.

Do you need any help?

YES. Parents are more than welcome to stay and assist their own children, especially with the younger children. We also very much welcome any parents who would be willing to help in the wider sessions and be registered as a formal club helper. Finally please get in touch if you would be interested in becoming a British Cycling coach.

We do require all coaches and formal helpers to go through the Disclosure Scotland process.

Well that all sounds excellent! Who do I contact?

The club is currently full in most age groups but we may still have space for riders aged 14-16 years.

Furthermore we may be in a position to increase our numbers again in the Spring of 2016 – to allow us to plan for this if your child is still interested in joining Glagow Riderz, and isn’t a member of another cycle club, then please email us with the following information.

  • DoB;
  • Type of cycling they like and how often they cycle;
  • Contact name and email address.

Also please let us know if you are interested in becoming a parent helper.

For other cycling opportunities in the Glasgow Area please contact Morven Brown at Scottish Cycling or the Glasgow Cycle Development Officer Jake Lovatt.  Other cycling clubs are listed here..
