Finding the motivation to train during lockdown is a challenge that faces all the clubs at the moment, and it’s not just training! We’re all looking for activities to keep the community spirit going, or perhaps even build on an existing spirit*!

One of our riderz, Millie, has been hosting daily sessions for a few weeks now, and at the start of the period she started wondering if there were any cycling celebrities she could get to join in. As soon as we started asking around everyone’s first suggestion was “try and get Anna Shackley(Double British Champion and member of Team GB”. So Millie reached out to her on social media (I think that’s what the young people do. I have little or no understanding of their methods of communication. Could have been a letter for all I know) and Anna agreed!

So this afternoon we had a great turnout for out inaugural #meetingyourheroes session and Anna was amazing,  inspiring a group that literally ranges from 7-17. I can’t emphasise how much this means to the Riderz involved. If nothing else, by the end of lockdown we’ll hopefully have strengthened the foundations in our community to take forward when the trails re-open.

The trails are going to reopen, right?

Coming soon, Geoff, who’s also running sessions, has approached Jack Cruden (Junior British track Champion) who’s agreed to run a session and Isla Short, Team GB XC mountain bike racer has agreed to do one of Millie’s! if you haven’t seen Isla’s youtube video, watch it here.

Once again, Anna, you were awesome thanks you so much for your time. Next time they might not be so starstruck…

*literally my worst ever metaphor.
